Akhun Mountain can be easily recognized because it is the highest mountain in the area (about 10 km south from the center of Sochi). Its observation tower can be visible with the naked eye from the center of Sochi, if nothing blocks the view.
The 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) road leading to the top of the mountain was built in 1935. The observation tower on the top of the mountain was built in 1936 (Architect Sergey Vorobyov). Its austere lines resemble early medieval Roman structure. The five-floored tower is made of limestone and marl quarried from the mountain. The tower is 30.5 meters (100 feet) high. The whole structure tapers to a narrow observation platform on top, easily reached by an external stairway.
The sweeping view takes in the inimitable blue sea, the gentle lines of the coast and if you turn the other way the majestic mountain peaks topped with eternal snow and ice (Chugush 3.240 meters, Pseashko 3.257 meters, Fisht 2.852 meters, Achishko 2.363 and others).
